Android Wear gets a new Update to Android Oreo 8.0

Have you heard about Android Wear? Well, the then underwhelming OS for smartwatches is getting revamped and updated to Android Oreo 8.0, along with the rest of the Android roster. The update’s announcement was made by Google on the Google Plus group “Android Wear Developers”. Apparently, the only product that support it at the moment seems to be the LG Watch Sport, which is understandable since the watch was the only one to feature a Android O beta back in October of this year.

The latest big update for Wear was it’s Android Wear 2.0 update, which was coupled with LG’s smart watch at the start of the year. However, most users might not be able to tell any difference. Similar to Android TV, Android wear comes with a unique interface and features that are developed completely separately from the original OS. While the update may change many under the hood aspects, it won’t make a huge difference from a user-facing standpoint.

Android Wear has been struggling to make its mark on the Market since it was released. In the first quarter of 2017, Apple Watch controlled 57% of the smartwatch market, according to a report by Strategy Analytics, with the Tizon OS by Samsung coming at second with 19%. Android wear was a close third at 18%. The group seems to be in some sort of shakeup right now, which is evidenced by David Singleton, vice president of Android Wear’s engineering team, resigning from his position at Google.

Like I previously stated in my review of LG’s Sport Watch, the issue isn’t really with Google’s software, but with the inability by manufacturers to produce good enough smartwatch chips. Qualcomm is the only SoC manufacturer at the moment that seems to be concerned with the smartwatch component sector, but they’re using horribly outdated components. Their latest addition, the 2100 Snapdragon Wear, was created on a 28-nanometer process, which was last used on a flagship Qualcomm mobile chip back in the 2014. Samsung and Apple are also manufacturing their own chips, but with a much more updated process, which results in much cooler, smaller and rapid chips.

Oreo will be rolled out on the LG sport for now, and Google stated that they will be waiting on other manufacturers to determine a best time to roll it out on other smartwatches in the future.
